Raleigh Hazardous Weather: Hail The Size Of Quarters Possible

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook over north-central North Carolina, mainly along the U.S. Route 70 corridor.

RALEIGH, NC — A few strong to severe storms are heading to Raleigh and hail the size of quarters is possible, The National Weather Service warned. The agency issued a hazardous weather outlook for the region early Wednesday, saying storms were possible this afternoon and evening over north central North Carolina, mainly along and north of the U.S. Route 70 corridor.

The storm could bring wind gusts of more than 60 mph. The greatest chance for storms was between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., the agency said. WRAL-TV reported that the Triangle will see "scattered" storms.

"Like Saturday, it will be scattered," said meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. "There will be some times where there is no rain falling — you may miss out all together or you could see a couple inches of rain."

The new storm system comes just two days after intense flooding forced people to abandon their cars under feet of water. Photos and video showed several cars under water near the Crabtree Valley Mall, at the intersection of Route 70 and Creedmoor Road on the city's north side.

WRAL-TV says the sky will clear up Thursday though and temperatures could reach the high 80s.

"Any thundershowers on Thursday should be few and far between for most of us, with somewhat better chances from around Fayetteville south," said Gardner.

Friday will probably be more of the same, but bad storms could return Saturday and put a damper on Memorial Day weekend plans.
