True Crime Podcasts Cover Infamous North Carolina Case
A new study highlights podcasts that covered the infamous Michael Peterson case.

At this point, most people have heard about the chilling case involving a North Carolina man and his wife. Even if the details aren’t well known, you’ve probably heard the name, Michael Peterson.
In the early morning hours of December 9, 2001, he called 911 to report that he found the dead body of his wife Kathleen at the bottom of a staircase in the Durham mansion. Shortly, after this, Michael Peterson became the prime suspect and was charged with murdering his wife.
He was eventually convicted of first-degree murder and imprisoned, however, Peterson later submitted an Alford plea, which entails that he plead guilty due to the evidence against him, but he still asserts his innocence. This rare type of plea eventually secured his freedom.

Over the past two decades, this case has become a true-crime hit. It was featured as a 13-episode docuseries on Netflix titled The Staircase, which was released in 2018. It has also been featured on true crime podcasts such as Criminal and My Favorite Murder. To this day, Peterson still lives in Durham and wrote a book that was independently published in 2019, titled “Behind the Staircase” in 2019. His former 5-bedroom mansion on a 3.4-acre lot in Durham was officially up for sale again in July 2020, it was listed for $1.9 million.
