5 Whole Food Stores In Ohio Exposed To Hackers

Customers who bought meals or drinks at its in-store restaurants or bars possibly were exposed to hackers, the grocer said.

Whole Foods stores in Rocky River and Akron are among the locations impacted by a data breach where customers’ credit and debit card payment information may have been accessed. Three other locations in Ohio also were among the taprooms and full-table service restaurants nationwide that were affected.

In Rocky River, the Detroit Road store’s Tap Room was exposed to the breach. In Akron, the West Market Street store’s Fresh Eats and Gengi Asian venues were exposed.

Also in Ohio, at the Easton Gateway Drive store in Columbus, the Tap Room was exposed. In Upper Arlington, the Pizza, Sandwich, and Taqueria venues and the Tap Room of the West Lane Avenue store were exposed. In Dayton, the Pizza Venue and the Tap Room of the Miamisburg Centerville Road store were exposed.

The grocer, which was recently acquired by Seattle-based online retailer Amazon.com Inc., says the data breach did not affect any Amazon.com shoppers, nor did it affect cards used at the primary store checkout systems, as venues like taprooms and restaurants use a different point-of-sale system.

The company continues to investigate the hack, and says it will provide additional updates as it learns more. The grocery chain said on its website that encourages customers to closely monitor their payment card statements and report any unauthorized charges to the issuing bank.
