Dad Sings A Stellar National Anthem When Sound System Fails

"The world needs to see this," another Waverly High School parent said after filming Trenton Brown's impromptu performance.

WEST PORTSMOUTH, OH — A few moments of awkward silence preceded what has turned out to be one of the most memorable performances of the National Anthem this year.

The anthem wouldn't play on the sound system before Friday night's high school basketball game between the Waverly High School Tigers and Portsmouth West High School Senators due to technical difficulties.

But in came Trenton Brown, one of the Waverly parents, who, without a microphone, belted out a spectacular version of the anthem. Other parents from both Waverly and Portsmouth West joined in, and within a few minutes, the game was on.

"I looked over at the announcer and the music didn't play and didn't play and I looked over, and he was getting a little frustrated. My wife gave me a little nudge and said "sing" and I said, "all right,'" Brown told CNN.

"There was a lot of awkward silence... and then I started singing and that was it."

Johnny Futhey, another Waverly parent, captured video of Brown's performance on his Facebook page. Futhey later told CNN "the world needs to see this."

Futhey told CNN Brown's impromptu performance "brought about everyone in the gym to tears."

Brown told the news network he had sung before a crowd before, but had never performed the National Anthem solo.

After Friday night, he shouldn't be too surprised if he gets requests to do it again.

"Someone needs to sign this guy," Futhey said.
