NYC Terror Attack: Man Accused Of Hitting Bikers Has Ohio Ties

Sayfullo Saipov had businesses in Cincinnati and Cuyahoga Falls, where he got married, public records show.

CLEVELAND, OH – The suspect in a terror attack near the World Trade Center in Manhattan had started two businesses in Ohio and had lived in the state for some time. Authorities in New York say Sayfullo Saipov, a 29-year-old who came to the United States legally in 2010, plowed into a crowded riverfront path, killing at least eight people and injuring 11 others.

Saipov, who was shot by an officer, was hospitalized and is expected to recover. According to records at the Ohio Secretary of State’s office, Saipov in May 2011 registered a business, Sayf Motors Inc., an automotive company on Brisden Place in Cincinnati. In August 2013, he registered a second automotive business, Bright Auto LLC, to an address on Americana Drive in Cuyahoga Falls.

Bright Auto, according to online records, is an interstate trucking company that employs one driver and has a single truck.

Records in Summit County also indicate Saipov was married to Nozima Odilova, then 19, at their residence at 4180 Americana Drive on April 12, 2013. The couple’s marriage was officiated by “Abdulloh,” according to Summit County probate court records. Neither was previously married, and Saipov lists his occupation as a truck driver.

Prior to the attack on Tuesday, Saipov had lived in Paterson, New Jersey, with his wife and two children. Saipov rented the truck used in the attack from a Home Depot store in Passaic, according to reports.

Saipov is originally from Uzbekistan and arrived in the United States in 2010, according to CBS News. The Associated Press reported that he had a Florida driver's license. The New York City Police Department said he drove a rented pickup truck onto the bike path on West Street a few blocks north of Chambers Street shortly after 3 p.m. and drove down it, hitting multiple people.

Saipov is expected to survive and investigators will, most likely, question him about his motive for the attack, according to the Washington Post report. He was a "lone wolf" and carried out the attack alone after he was inspired by, but did not take orders from, the Islamic State, according to the report.
