COLUMBUS, OH — Ohio easily broke its record for the most COVID-19 virus cases confirmed in a single day on Monday.

Health officials confirmed 11,855 new cases in the past 24 hours. That surpasses the previous high, of nearly 9,000 cases, and the state's average of 6,733 new cases per day.

"The high volume of these cases is overwhelming the system. It's overwhelming the Ohio Department of Health system and the laboratories," Gov. Mike DeWine said Monday.

However, DeWine said the spike in cases on Monday partly attributable to laboratories catching up with backlogged work. There are still 15,000 backlogged antigen tests that have not yet been added to the state's cumulative case total. DeWine expects 75 percent of those backlogged tests to be confirmed as positive.
