Ohio Crosses 4,000 Coronavirus Deaths

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 4,000 Ohioans have died because of the virus.

COLUMBUS, OH — More than 4,000 Ohioans have now died due to COVID-19, the state health department announced.

On Tuesday, Gov. Mike DeWine called the state's death tally "tragic." He expected Ohio to cross 4,000 deaths on Wednesday. He was correct.

Over the past 24 hours, health officials confirmed 48 COVID-19-related deaths statewide. Since the start of the pandemic, 4,044 Ohioans have died because of coronavirus complications.

Health officials also confirmed more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases among Ohioans on Wednesday. Since the start of the pandemic, more than 117,000 Ohioans have contracted the virus.

Hospitalizations related to COVID-19 were steady on Wednesday, with 87 Ohioans entering hospitals for treatment related to the virus. Here are all of Wednesday's COVID-19 numbers:

  • New cases: 1,089
  • New deaths: 48
  • New hospitalizations: 87
  • New ICU admissions: 17
