Ohio Crosses Tragic Coronavirus Milestone

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 5,000 Ohioans have died because of the virus.

COLUMBUS, OH — Ohio surpassed a tragic milestone on Monday amid a new surge of COVID-19 cases.

In the past 24 hours, six Ohioans have died because of complications created by the coronavirus. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 5,000 Ohioans have died because of COVID-19.

Last week, Gov. Mike DeWine addressed his state's struggle with the virus.

"We can stop the coronavirus. We have it in our power to slow it down. I know everyone is tired, but we must learn to live with it. Distance and masks are essential," he said during a news conference.

On Friday, Ohio confirmed more than 1,800 new COVID-19 cases. That's the most the state has recorded in a single 24-hour period since the pandemic began. The ground-breaking surge prompted further comment from DeWine.

"We can continue to try to improve our economy and get more people back to work, but the only way we can do that is to keep the virus down. We've got to hang in there. We're Ohioans. We can do this," he said.

Here are all of Monday's COVID-19 numbers in Ohio:

  • New cases: 1,430
  • New deaths: 6
  • New hospitalizations: 43
  • New ICU admissions: 6
