Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club Finds New Way To Help The Community

A Little Garden Book House has been installed at Miller Park, allowing residents to check out literature on gardening.

AVON LAKE, OH — A new "Little Garden Book House" can be found at the Wildflower Garden at Miller Park.

The Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2020. With COVID-19 foiling fundraisers and get-togethers, commemorating the moment has been difficult for the club.

"With the COVID pandemic going on, we were trying to figure out a way to reach out to the community and share our vision. We were challenged with how to do that without being able to meet with people," Elaine George, the club's president told Patch.

But necessity is the mother of invention. And the leaders of the club met this challenging moment with a unique gardening project for the community — the Little Garden Book House.

Inspired by the Little Free Library project, the club decided to construct a mini-library of gardening books. The mini-library is shaped like a house and is located at Miller Park. The books are free to the public.

The library was built by Sue Newcomb and decorated by Ann Lyon, both club members, and other Avon-on-the-Lake gardeners are contributing books to the house.

The Garden Book House contains literature on gardening, composting, garden books for kids and more. George said a relation to gardening or horticulture is the only limit on what books are on offer.

The mini-library has already proven popular with Avon Lake residents.

"This year was a really good year for [the project] because of the coronavirus. We've found a lot of people are interested in gardens. We knew this was something that might be really well received," George said.

She said she's already had to restock the library's book offerings. She's also been fielding more questions from residents about what they can do on their own property and how they can contribute to the club.
