Avon Student Named National Merit Finalist

Cole Emerine scored a perfect 36 on his ACT in 2020. Now he's a National Merit Finalist.

AVON, OH — One Avon High student has been named a National Merit Finalist.

Cole Emerine, 18, earned the honor last week. He now has an opportunity to compete for National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $30 million. Scholarship winners will be announced later this year.

More than 1.5 million students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program annually. Only 16,000 students become semifinalists. Approximately 15,000 students become finalists. Scholarship winners will be announced in late March.

Cole is the son of Carolyn and Jeff Emerine. He is captain of the hockey team, captain of the cross country team, a member of the track team and president of the Avon Future Scholars of Medicine Club.

In 2020, Cole received a perfect 36 score on his ACT exam.

Cole is considering a colleges in the west, namely Stanford University, University of California Berkeley, and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He would like to major in microbiology or molecular biology.
