Avon Lake residents were targeted by con artists and hackers during the opening weeks of April.
AVON LAKE, OH — Hackers and con artists plagued Avon Lake residents in the opening weeks of April, according to police reports.
Officers are investigating cases involving counterfeit money, hacked computers and compromised bank accounts. Read more about the most-recent fraud cases below.
Identity theft, April 2 — Someone opened car loans and credit cards using an Avon Lake resident's information. The resident then discovered her money had been transferred out of her bank and she was locked out of her accounts.

Identity theft, April 3 — A car loan was opened using an Avon Lake resident's information.
Fraud, April 3 — A resident's computer was hacked and someone made purchases using her credit and debit card information.

Suspicious activity, April 6 — A resident sold a dog crate via Facebook Marketplace. In exchange for the crate, the resident received a $20 bill. However, after getting home and examining the money, the resident discovered the bill was counterfeit. Avon Lake police collected the bill as evidence.
