'Get COVID-19 Vaccine' Lorain County Health Tells High Schoolers

AVON LAKE, OH — High school students should get a COVID-19 vaccine before the school year ends, Lorain County Public Health announced Friday.

Due to the timeline for COVID-19 doses, there is a two-month period when a person cannot receive any other vaccines, the agency said. Parents should note that since students will need to get their back-to-school vaccines before the fall.

“As a parent, I know that August is a busy month for families and students,” said Lorain County Health Commissioner Dave Covell. “Getting the COVID-19 vaccine now will help students and their families safely enjoy traditions like prom, graduation and summer vacations. And they’ll have plenty of time to get any other vaccines needed for the upcoming school year.”

Here's what parents should know when scheduling an appointment for the COVID-19 vaccine:

• No other vaccine can be received two weeks before dose No. 1 of the COVID-19 vaccine
• No other vaccine can be received between dose No. 1 and dose No. 2
• No other vaccine can be received for two weeks after dose No. 2.

"This means that two weeks after you have received your second dose of the Modera or Pfizer vaccine, you can get your back-to-school vaccine," Lorain County Public Health said.

As a reminder, here are the federal guidelines on who can receive a COVID-19 vaccine:

● Moderna is available to people ages 18+

● Pfizer is available to people ages 16+
