4 Ways to Prep Your Home for Halloween
Clear your house of deterrents to make sure it looks inviting for trick-or-treaters.

You have your costume picked out and you bought a ton of candy, so you’re ready for Halloween — but is your house? Here are four things you need to do around the house before the trick-or-treaters make the rounds on Friday night.
- Mow the Lawn: High grass makes your house look abandoned, which is spooky, but not appropriate for Halloween. Trick or treaters won’t come to your door if they think no one is home. A well-kept lawn also makes it easy for kids to spot things they might trip on.
- Keep the Lights On: Porch lights are another signal to kids that it’s safe to approach your house. If there’s a long walkway to your front door, you might consider lining it with lights to keep trick-or-treaters from tripping.
- Keep a Good Greeter at Your Door: You might get some very small children, so it’s a good idea to keep dogs and other pets in a secure and comfortable room inside the house on Halloween night.
- Put Out a Teal Pumpkin: The Teal Pumpkin Project, launching this year for trick-or-treaters with a food allergies, asks that houses with non-food treats put a teal-painted pumpkin on their porch.
And make sure to look up the trick-or-treating time in your neighborhood!
