How To Beat The Heat In Avon Lake
Several local buildings will open up their doors to welcome residents without air conditioning.
AVON LAKE, OH — With an extreme heat wave gripping Northeast Ohio, the city of Avon Lake is reminding residents of several places they can go to stay cool if they don't have air conditioning.
The Old Firehouse Community Center will be open Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be complementary ice tea and lemonade for anyone that stops by. The Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center Splash Zone will also be open throughout the weekend and guests won't need a pool pass to visit.
The Avon Lake Public Library will be open Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will host family-friendly movie screenings at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Guests will be able to get free candy. The movies will be free to attend.

Heat indexes represent what temperatures will feel like to people outside — meaning they account for both temperatures and humidity. In Ohio, the heat wave could produce regular heat indexes between 105 and 112 degrees on Friday and Saturday.
“Air-conditioning is the number one way to protect yourself from heat-related illness and death,” said David Covell, health commissioner at Lorain County Public Health. “Shopping centers, libraries, and senior centers are just a few community places where residents can go to keep cool."

If you can't get to an air conditioned place, try to stay on the lowest floors of your home.
