Pinewood Derby Races Into Avon On Saturday

The annual event will see hand-built wooden cars raced along a massive track at a local school.

AVON, OH — The annual Pinewood Derby will be held Saturday at Avon Heritage Elementary Schoool, 35575 Detroit Road. Parents and kids will race their hand-built model cars on a pinewood track that runs 64 feet long and 12 feet tall. That's twice the length of the average pinewood track.

The cars will reach scale speeds of 320 mph. A precise, computer-controlled sensor will correctly record all race times, so nose-to-nose finishes will be encouraged. Avon Mayor Bryan Jensen will even be on-hand to judge Best Design by age group.

Jensen will help the event kick-off at 9 a.m. The Two Feathers group, a Natives Sons and Daughters Program, puts the event together.

Building pinewood cars is both simple and thrilling. Start with a standard kit for the car then shape the vehicle and follow simple instructions to finish. Creativity with the cars is encouraged, so look for flashy paint jobs and other flourishes.

Awards are given out for both speed and design and will be awarded by age group.
