Beloved Beachwood Math Teacher Killed In Car Crash

Art Gugick was in an Uber that was struck when a car ran a red light, according to the school district.

BEACHWOOD, OH — Monday morning dawned with a sense of shock and mourning in Beachwood. Beloved high school math teacher Art Gugick was killed over the weekend in a car crash, the Beachwood Schools announced.

In a short message posted to social media Beachwood Schools Superintendent Bob Hardis broke the news of Gugik's death. He said the teacher was travelling in an Uber on Saturday night. A car ran a red light and hit the Uber, killing Gugick and another passenger, Hardis said.

The crash happened in Shaker Heights, according to WKYC. The driver of the Uber survived the accident. The driver of the other car has been detained by police.

"At this time, we are in contact with Mr. Gugick's family, but do not yet know about his funeral arrangements. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Our staff have been made aware of this tragedy and we are putting supports in place for them and for our students tomorrow," Hardis said.

He added that the Beachwood Schools will pull together as a community to support Gugick's family, and one another, during this unforeseen and tragic time.

In response to Hardis' message, families and former students flooded Beachwood's Facebook with memorial messages, all remembering Gugick as a wonderful teacher and human being.

"Art Gugick was an incredible teacher, and a truly gifted, wonderful human. The world has lost a true treasure," wrote one commenter.

"What tragic news. A wonderful teacher who positively influenced both of my children. Horrible to hear this, condolences to his family," said another commenter.
