Man Charged In Death Of Art Gugik Makes 1st Court Appearance
Sanford Doss is accused of running a red light in his car and hitting an Uber carrying Gugik and another person.
CLEVELAND — The man accused of killing Beachwood teacher Art Gugik and Barbara Becker, a Shaker Heights woman, made his first appearance in court on Wednesday.
Sanford Doss, 31, faces two charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and one charge of aggravated vehicular assault for the two deaths. Police said Doss ran a red light in his car and then hit an Uber carrying Gugik and Becker.
Gugik and Becker were killed in the crash. The driver of the Uber survived the accident, police said.

Doss waived his first appearance and his case will head to the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas, according to Fox 8. Doss' bond has been set at $250,000.
The Beachwood community has been in shock since news of Gugik's death broke. On Wednesday morning, Beachwood High held a memorial for Gugik, inviting the community to join students and staff in mourning. The funeral for Gugik was held after the memorial.

Beachwood Superintendent Bob Hardis said on social media that students have put up memorial banners around the school, with messages written on them by students and staff. Counseling supports have also been setup at the school and will remain in place as needed, he said.
