Opioid Epidemic Addressed In Ohio College's New Academic Program

A local university is rolling out a new program that tackles the murky waters of the opioid crisis.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH — Ohio was once called "the face" of the nation's opioid epidemic. With a high rate of overdose deaths and a lack of resources to help those battling addiction, it's easy to see why such a label fell onto the Buckeye State.

One of the challenges that has reared its head during the opioid epidemic has been a lack of certified counselors. That's why John Carroll University's Department of Counseling is launching a new Substance Use Disorders Counseling Certificate program.

The program is open to people with an associates's, bachelor's, or master's degree and are looking to enter the field of counseling. Program participants will be specifically trained to help individuals dealing with chemical dependency or substance abuse issues.

The certificate program will consist of five courses and will specifically complement people with backgrounds in behavioral sciences, criminal justice, nursing and social work.

Applications for the program are currently being accepted. Classes will start May 14.
