Richmond Road Construction Projects Near Completion

Months of work should come to a close during the first weeks of October, according to the city.

BEACHWOOD, OH — After months of work, the Richmond Road construction project will soon be coming to a close. The city said all orange cones and barriers should be removed from the street during the first or second week of October.

“We are glad to have had the opportunity to improve the northbound lanes of Richmond Road to match the southbound lane improvements made a couple of years ago. Richmond Road is one of the most-travelled roads with two of the busiest intersections in Cuyahoga County and the improvements made will help to ensure our transportation infrastructure on this busy road remains rock-solid," said Beachwood Mayor Martin Horwitz. "I am grateful for the patience of our residents and business owners while this project, and the Dominion gas-pipeline project, impacted our traffic patterns.”

The construction zone has shrunk considerably since the beginning of the project. Crews are now installing catch basins on Richmond near Chagrin Boulevard. The Illuminating Company is also installing power for the new Lake Health building. All of the work is weather dependent.

For months, crews have been working on various aspects of Richmond Road. Besides the catch basins and power installation, crews have worked on curbs, sidewalks, re-grading the road, paving, and even landscaping.

Michael Rider, superintendent of sealed operations for the city, said construction on Richmond Road started around May 1, when Dominion Gas began installing a gas line, near Fairmount and Ramsay Road. That project was completed two weeks ago, and the gas line is now fully operational. Crews are now hoping to pour concrete, do striping for the roadways, landscape reconstruction and other odds and ends to tidy up the street.

The city's share of work on the main roadway started around mid-July. That portion of construction is also slated to be completed during the first weeks of October. While there may be a handful of final steps to wrap-up the project, things like grinding and ride testing, those shouldn't hold up traffic too much.

Lynn Johnson, the communications coordinator for the city, noted that everything with the final stages of construction is weather dependent. For example, crews may not be able to pour concrete until the weather dries up a bit. While a little moisture does not prevent concrete pours, heavy rain and saturated target areas will stop progress.
