On September 27, St. Michael School Jr. Kindergarteners at the St. Basil Campus in Brecksville received a visit from Matt Toth, an Elyria mail carrier, as a part of School and Community Month. During this month, students discussed different places in the community (post office, hospital, restaurant, police department, library) and their employees. Students even practiced their own community role by working with a partner to play a role.
Toth explained to the kindergarteners the process of sorting mail each morning, how to deliver a package to the correct address, and even a new word for package—parcel. He answered questions and showed students his uniform, describing the importance each piece held, and even allowed students to try some on.
Additionally, students began an introduction to maps, exploring various maps and even looking up some of their addresses on the ActivBoard. They learned that every place in a community has an address and the importance of learning their own address and phone number.
The classroom mock-community extended further, however, as the kitchen became a “Panera,” complete with a simplified menu, a post office in the art/writing center, a construction zone in blocks, and a Little People playground.
“My favorite activity this month was our Show & Share where we brought something in that had to do with what we want to be when we grow up,” said Erin Toth, the Jr. Kindergarten teacher at St. Michael School. “ As each person pulled their Show & Share item out of their coffee can, we guessed what job they wanted to have.”
