Ohio Home Sellers Saw 10-Year High In Profits: Report

Average profit on home sales reached a 10-year high in the final quarter of 2017. See what it was in Ohio and in Cleveland.

CLEVELAND, OH — The average profit people made on home sales in the final quarter of 2017 reached a more than 10-year high, according to a new report published Thursday. In Ohio, sellers made $15,950 on average when selling their house.

For several years, between 2007 and part of 2016, most Ohioans were seeing a loss of investment, with homes selling for less than what they were bought for. That trend started to shift in the third quarter of 2016, with homes now adding nearly $16,000 to their average sale price.

The median sale price of homes in Ohio has also seen a pretty drastic three-year increase. In 2015, the average price of a home in Ohio was $96,900. By 2017, the average sale price in Ohio was $130,100.

Here's what the average seller gains in these Ohio metropolitan areas:

  • Columbus, OH — $34,000
  • Cincinnati, OH — $18,100
  • Dayton, OH — $14,250
  • Akron, OH — $10,000
  • Cleveland, OH — $10,000
  • Toledo, OH — $9,437
  • Springfield, OH — $9,100

Among the nation's top five metropolitan areas with the highest average home seller ROI in the last quarter of 2017, four were in California. According to ATTOM, those areas are:

  • San Jose, California (90.1 percent ROI)
  • San Francisco, California (73.3 percent ROI)
  • Merced, California (64.6 percent ROI)
  • Seattle, Washington (64.4 percent ROI)
  • Santa Cruz, California (59.8 percent ROI)

The median home price in 2017 also reached a new all-time high, according to ATTOM. In 2017, the U.S. median home price was $235,000.
