Ohioans Pay Pretty High Property Tax Rates: Report
With home values low compared to the rest of the nation, that high rate doesn't always translate to big dollars for cities or counties.

CLEVELAND, OH — Ohioans are paying some of the highest property taxes in the nation, according to a new analysis from ATTOM Data. The 2017 property tax analysis found that the Buckeye State had the ninth highest property tax rate — 1.72 percent — in the nation.
Ohio's property tax rate increased last year, by .6 percent, versus 2016. The average annual property tax in Ohio for 2017 was $$2,717 in 2017 and in 2016 that figure was $$2,616.
The Cleveland-Elyria metropolitan area had an average property tax amount of $$3,561 and an effective tax rate of 2.11 percent. The average property taxes in the metro area increased 6 percent when compared to 2016. Nationwide, the average metro area property tax rate increased just 3 percent.

Cuyahoga County, which covers Cleveland, had a slightly higher average property tax amount of $3,818.
Nationwide, ATTOM found that property taxes levied on single family homes went up 6 percent. Average property taxes for a single family home in 2017 went up 3 percent to $3,399 from the average property tax of $3,296 in 2016.
