10 Autumn Chores to Prepare Your House for Winter

Patch and Zillow Team up to bring you the latest real estate news and listings in your town.

Fall — so called because of the falling leaves — can be a tough time for homeowners. Obviously you’ll have to rake up those leaves to keep your lawn looking good during the colder months.

But leaves aren’t the only thing you should be on the lookout for. The Human Services Center Corporation made a list of the 10 fall chores you need to finish before the snow starts to fall.

  1. Check weather stripping and caulking around windows and doors. Replace or repair as needed.
  2. Check for cracks and holes in house siding. Fill with caulking as necessary.
  3. Remove window air conditioners or put weatherproof covers on them.
  4. Remove and clean screens.
  5. Clean, repair, and install storm windows.
  6. Drain outdoor faucets.
  7. Clean out gutters and drain pipes to prevent clogging.
  8. Check the roof for leaks.
  9. Check sealing around vents, skylights, and chimneys for leaks.
  10. Clean the chimney flue and make sure it closes properly.
