COLUMBUS, OH – The State Medical Board of Ohio has approved 36 physicians statewide to recommend medical marijuana to patients. They are the first doctors in the state to get the certification under a new state law allowing certain patients to be allowed to use the drug for medicinal purposes.
To get the certification, doctors must be licensed and practicing as either a medical doctor or doctor of osteopathic medicine. The doctors must also have completed two hours of continuing medical education that helps them diagnose conditions where the use of marijuana would be beneficial and how marijuana might interact with other drugs.
The State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy, meantime, is working to establish a patient registry, which is expected by late summer. By Sept. 8, the medical marijuana dispensaries will be operational and selling the marijuana produced by the Ohio growers and processors licensed under the Department of Commerce.
