Beachwood Cares for Kid's Safety: Commits $250,000 for Seat Belts

Beachwood Schools To Install Lap-Shoulder Seat Belts In All The New School Buses With City Funds On Recommendation Started By Third Graders

On 12/17/18 the Beachwood City Council in cooperation with their Board of Education and the Mayor's office committed $250,000 of City funds to installing lap-shoulder seat belts in all their new school buses. Beachwood will now be the first school district in Ohio to install seat belts in buses for all their children. The innovative Ordinance was prompted by a third-grade class recommendation, as part of a civics lesson, to Council including Councilman James Pasch who was severely injured as a student in a New Jersey school bus accident. Beachwood should be commended for having such progressive, thoughtful and caring leaders who truly have the best interests of children in mind. In the US, five to six children (9 in 2016) and thousands are injured as passengers in school bus incidents each year. Beachwood’s action is a turning point for children’s safety in Ohio and will encourage other cities, like Avon Lake that may conduct an installation trial in 1-3 buses next Spring, to follow their lead, pool their local resources and protect their children by installing seat belts as recently recommended (5/18) by the National Transportation Safety Board. I'm reminded of the old expression "Out of the mouths of babes...".
