Kent Keyboard Series Offers Masterworks Featuring Pianist and Northwestern University Faculty Member James Giles
The Kent Keyboard Series at Kent State University continues its 2016-2017 season with a concert on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m. in Ludwig Recital Hall, located in the Center for the Performing Arts on the Kent Campus. Free parking is available.

The third concert in the series, featuring masterworks performed by pianist James Giles, begins with Franz Schubert’s “Drei Klavierstucke,” a collection of three pieces for piano written just months before the composer’s death. Franz Liszt’s highly virtuosic “Sonata for Piano in B minor,” a massive one-movement work, is next on program. Ending the program are two songs by Sergei Rachmaninoff arranged by highly acclaimed pianist Earl Wild. Other composers on the program include Federico Mompou, Stephen Hough and Lowell Liebermann.

Cost: Tickets for the performance are $15 for adults; $13 for seniors and Kent State University faculty and staff; $10 for groups of 10 or more patrons; $8 for non-Kent State students who are not eligible for the Fee-for-Free; and free for full-time, Kent Campus undergraduate students. Anyone 18 and under can attend the concerts for free, although a ticket must be reserved.

Uumbaji Art Gallery Military Veterans Exhibit Kicks Off War Veterans Commemoration Events
Artwork by military veteran artists will be featured at Kent State University in the Uumbaji Art Gallery’s newest exhibit opening Oct. 31. The exhibit, Call to Arts: An Art Exhibit by Military Veterans, will be open to the public from Oct. 31 to Dec. 1. Artists and the public will be greeted with an opening reception on Nov. 3 from 5-7:30 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to all and will feature works in a variety of media. The Uumbaji Art Gallery is housed in the Department of Pan-African Studies in Ritchie Hall.

This exhibit will kick off the campus-wide War Veterans Commemoration events this November. A committee was formed at the beginning of this year that planned not only the art exhibit but also a screening of Restrepo, a feature-length documentary about the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley, that will take place in the Kent Student Center Kiva on Nov. 9 at 5 p.m.

On Nov. 15 at 5:30 p.m., the May 4 Visitor Center will present Edward Linenthal speaking on “Violence and the American Landscape: From Lexington and Concord to 9/11, an Illustrated Lecture.”

Kent State School of Theatre and Dance Turns Fairy Tales Upside Down with “Into the Woods”
The School of Theatre and Dance at Kent State University continues its 2016-2017 season with the classic Tony Award-winning musical, “Into the Woods.” The production runs Friday, Nov. 4, through Sunday, Nov. 13, in E. Turner Stump Theatre, located in the Center for the Performing Arts on the university’s Kent Campus. Tuesday through Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday performances begin at 2 p.m.

Directed by School of Theatre and Dance’s Eric van Baars, “Into the Woods” is an epic fairy tale that proves the road to happily ever after isn’t all that it seems. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, this enchanting modern classic brings together some of the most popular characters of the Brothers Grimm and sends them on a journey that will make them question their choices.

Cost: Tickets are $18 for adults; $14 for Kent State University alumni, faculty and staff; $14 for seniors (60+) and non-Kent State students age 18 and under are $10. Tickets for full-time, Kent Campus undergraduates are free of charge. Groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets for $12 per person. Flex pass subscriptions are also available. The box office accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, checks and cash.

ATHLETICS
Kent State Men’s Basketball Holds Open Practice
The Kent State University men's basketball team will host a special open practice Sunday, Nov. 6, fromnoon-2 p.m. in the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center).

Fans will have a chance to meet the Kent State Golden Flashes men’s basketball team during an autograph session and meet and greet. Food and beverages will be provided by Taproot Catering, and fans will have a chance to win prizes through a 50/50 drawing and other raffle opportunities. The Kent State Golden Flashes will unveil this year’s Under Armour jerseys, and head coach Rob Senderoff will be mic’d up for the entire practice.

Cost: Admission to the event is $10 per person, with season ticket holders receiving free admission for one person per ticket purchased. Fans must RSVP by Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Local Author Jane Turzillo Holds Book Signing at Kent State University Bookstore
Kent State University Bookstore will welcome local author Jane Turzillo for a book signing on Friday, Oct. 28, from noon-2 p.m. Turzillo is an award-winning, non-fiction, history and true crime author who wroteWicked Women in Northeast Ohio, Unsolved Murders and Disappearances in Northeast Ohio and Ohio Train Disasters.
