The DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program founded in 1983 is run in Lakewood by the police department who puts on a basketball tournament each year for all the 5th graders from all the elementary schools in Lakewood. Teams from each of Lakewood’s seven public elementary schools compete against each other in a single elimination tournament format. The Lakewood Division of Police partners with the Lakewood Community Services Center to collect donations, monetary, non-perishable food items, or hygiene products in the lobby during the tournament. Officers and volunteers collect the items, which will then be donated, to the Lakewood Community Services Center. Attendees who bring a donation receive one raffle ticket to win a prize.
A good time is had by all. Here's a link to a Facebook photo album of the event: https://www.facebook.com/media...
