Lakewood Gets A Look At The New Family Health Center [PHOTOS]
The Cleveland Clinic Lakewood Family Health Center had a ribbon-cutting ceremony and opened its doors to the Lakewood community on Saturday.
LAKEWOOD, OH — The Cleveland Clinic opened its doors to the new Lakewood Family Health Center and welcomed all members of the Lakewood community to take a look and learn about what it will have to offer.
On Thursday, June 28, a ribbon cutting ceremony was performed to kick things off.
On Saturday, the new facility was open to the public. Tours and activities of all kinds were on hand, the Lakewood Fire Department also taught hands-only CPR.

The new three-story, 64,700-square-foot Cleveland Clinic Lakewood Family Health Center will begin welcoming patients on Wednesday, July 11.
The $34 million family health center at 14601 Detroit Avenue features 60 exam rooms and an all new, 24/7 full-service emergency department which will open on Wednesday, July 25.
“Cleveland Clinic has served Lakewood for more than two decades,” said Tom Mihaljevic, M.D., CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic. “We are proud to continue to offer convenient access to care through the new Lakewood Family Health Center, which was custom-designed to meet the healthcare needs of the Lakewood community.”
The Lakewood Family Health Center will offer a variety of outpatient services, including specialty care; family medicine; primary care; imaging; and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) clinic. Specialty care will include cardiology, pulmonary, geriatrics, endocrinology and diabetes care, as well as behavioral health services, featuring adult and pediatric psychiatry and adult psychology.
The new family health center will place a strong emphasis on chronic disease management with a focus on diabetes, smoking-related health issues and asthma. These services were identified in a Community Health Needs Assessment for Lakewood.
“The Lakewood Family Health Center is focused on world-class quality, outstanding care, strong educational programs and a commitment to be a valued and trusted community partner,” said James Hekman, M.D., medical director of the Cleveland Clinic Lakewood Family Health Center. “We are looking forward to continuing to provide ongoing care in this new era of healthcare to Lakewood.”
Additional offerings for patients include an outpatient lab, group education and shared medical appointment rooms, patient-centered exam rooms designed to foster a more engaged interaction between patients and providers, care coordination, population management specialists and patient navigators.
The Cleveland Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program with the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine will also be present at the family health center. The medical students will be part of the healthcare team and will serve the community through graduation, residency and board certification. The goal through this program is to train physicians in Northeast Ohio and retain them to practice in Northeast Ohio.
Through the new Emergency Department, the Lakewood Family Health Center will continue to provide 24/7 emergency care for all ages, 365 days a year. Some of the types of care the emergency department will treat include:
- Abdominal pain
- Adult and pediatric conditions (fever, stomach flu, bronchiolitis, dehydration, asthma, etc.)
- Behavioral health and chemical dependency evaluations/referrals
- Chest pain
- Diabetes complications
- Broken bones, strains and sprains
- Minor trauma (laceration repair)
- Severe headache
- Stroke symptoms
- Other medical emergencies
Patients with more complex conditions or needing highly specialized treatments can be transferred seamlessly within the Cleveland Clinic health system.
Whiting-Turner is the construction contractor on the project, Bostwick Design Partnership designed the new family health center.
The Cleveland Clinic Lakewood Family Health Center is hosting a community open house from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 30. The community is invited to tour the new family health center, get valuable health information and take advantage of free screenings.
