St. Edward High Wins Another State Wrestling Championship

The Lakewood-based high school claimed its 65th state championship, across all sports, this week.

LAKEWOOD, OH — St. Edward High won its third state duals wrestling championship in four years this week in dramatic fashion. The team had to come back from a 19-0 deficit and then maintain a narrow lead.

With a slim 23-22 lead and two matches to go, senior Seamus O'Malley went to the ring. He pinned his opponent in 58 seconds, effectively clinching the Eagles state championship victory.

“I wasn’t really looking at scoreboard,” said O’Malley. “Coach just told me to be ready. I just went in with the confidence knowing that I was going to win. I didn’t know how quick. I just went in and stayed confident. I had good help from my teammates.”

Last year, the Eagles lost the duals championship to Graham, a small-school wrestling powerhouse. This year, St. Edward's boys would not be denied.
