Then and Now: You Won’t Believe What’s Here Now

Before the new Discount Drug Mart on Detroit Avenue — and before the Ganley Auto dealership — the corner of Cohassett and Detroit avenues featured one of Lakewood’s most grand homes.

The home was the former residence of Nelson Cotabish, a sales manager for the National Carbon Company and the city’s first mayor (there were a few mayors before Lakewood became incorporated as a city).

According to the Cleveland Memory Project, Cotabish became inspired by the homes in Cohassett, MA, and incorporated them into the design of his home near the intersection of what is now Cohassett and Detroit avenues.

The home was demolished before Ganley opened up a dealership on the property in 1979.

The new Discount Drug Mart opened its doors on June 3.
