Mentor Announces Arrest In Death Of Police Officer
The city also revealed the name of the fallen police officer.

MENTOR, OH — City officials announced that Brian Anthony has been arrested and charged with hitting Patrolman Mathew Mazany in a hit-and-run collision on early Saturday morning. Mazany died as a result of the collision
"We are very proud of and grateful to Mat Mazany for what he gave to his community," said City Manager Kenneth Filipiak. He continued, "Over the years he has consistently received letters from grateful residents on how he handled interaction with them with professionalism and compassion."
Mazany came from a family of police officers. Born in Maple Heights, Mazany's father was a police officer with the Maple Heights department for 34 years. Filipiak said it was Mazany's lifelong ambition to become a police officer.

The collision happened on SR-2 east, at about 1 a.m. Mazany was hit while assisting on a traffic stop. He was rushed to TriPoint Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Mazany, 41, leaves behind a 12-year-old son. He was a member of the Mentor Police Department for 14 years, the city said.
"Patrolman Mat Mazany remains in our hearts, and he and his family will forever be a part of our Mentor city family forever, forever a part of his brothers and sisters in law enforcement, and will forever hold a special place among all of us for whom he gave his life in service" Filipiak said. "

Anthony faces charges of tampering with evidence and leaving the scene of an accident.
