Mentor to Collect $1M in Street Light Assessments

The assessment is 95 cents per $1,000 of property valuation.

Mentor is set to continue providing lighting for city streets and collect money for the service for the next year.

There are 13,497 properties in the city that benefit from street lighting, according to a memo from finance director David Malinowski. Property owners pay 95 cents per $1,000 of valuation.

The aggregated sum of the assessments is $1,004,452.10. Expected expenditures were just over $1.1 million.

In May, city council approved a list including more than 400 streets are on the lighting list. The city notified homeowners who were to be assessed $250 or more and received no objections.

Collection will commence on Jan. 1, 2014. However, council passed the measure on an emergency basis earlier this month for any homeowner who wished to pay the assessment prior to its expected certification by the Lake County auditor in September.
