League of Women Voters Oxford holds forum January 17

"Local Successes and Future Challenges" in Talawanda School District

The League of Women Voters of Oxford invites Oxford area residents to its program "Local Successes and Future Challenges for the Talawanda School District," set for January 17, in the Undercroft of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, in Oxford, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. This forum will address such topics as funding and state-mandated requirements. Among presenters are Kelly Spivey, Superintendent, Talawanda School District, and Dr. Mary Jane Roberts, current Talawanda School Board member.

Superintendent Spivey, in her fourteen years at Talawanda, led in the creation of a Five Year Strategic Plan for the district. The plan emphasizes "empowering learners" in programs that use evidence-based strategies "to support student learning and to foster positive relationships." With over thirty-three years as an education professional, Spivey has also been prominent in statewide organizations. She has served on the Executive Committee of the Buckeye Association of School Administrators, their Report Card Committee and Legislative Committee.

Dr. Roberts has served Talawanda as an educator for almost forty years: as a teacher; as a principal; and since 2009, as a member of the School Board. She, too, has worked with state organizations, as well as with state government, with the goal of providing the "best public education possible for our district."

This forum will clarify current educational concerns, different from a decade ago, and consider how concerned district residents can support Talawanda schools. Those attending should use the Poplar Street Entrance to the Undercroft at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. The program is free and open to the public.
