In response, Miami's Institutional Response Team issued an email report at 1:27 p.m., noting that students had gathered near the protest scene and were "exercising their right of free speech by sharing opposing messages."

"Miami is continuing to monitor the situation and protect the safety of all involved, and we urge anyone who wishes to demonstrate to do so peacefully, civilly and safely, staying off of streets and on perimeter sidewalks as designated by university policy," the university statement said.
