63 People To Be Laid Off When KMart Closes In Middleburg Heights

The company said it will begin to release workers on December 31, 2018, right after the holiday season.

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, OH — More than 60 people will lose their jobs when the Middleburg Heights KMart closes its doors at the end of the year. Lay offs are scheduled to begin on December 31, 2018, according to a letter filed with the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services.

The letter, filed with the department this week, said the layoffs will play-out over a two-week period starting December 31. A total of 63 employees will be let go, the company said.

KMart stores nationwide are owned by the Sears Corporation, which filed for bankruptcy on Monday. As part of its filing, the company announced it would it would close at least 142 of its roughly 700 nationwide Sears and Kmart stores by the end of the year. That's in addition to the previously announced 46 store closings slated for next month.

Three Ohio stores will be impacted by the closures, including the Middleburg Heights location. A Sears in Niles and another KMart in East Liverpool will both also be shuttered before the end of the year, according to court filings.

The Middleburg Heights employees are not unionized and do not have bumping rights, according to the letter filed with ODJFS. A list of the impacted positions at the store can be found by clicking here.

"Our goal is to achieve a comprehensive restructuring as efficiently as possible, working closely with our creditors and other debtholders, and be better positioned to execute on our strategy and key priorities."Sears chairman Edward Lampert said in a statement earlier this week. "As we look toward the holiday season, Sears and Kmart stores remain open for business and our dedicated associates look forward to serving our members and customers."
