Solon Athletics Rack Up Wins, Awards Over Weekend

SOLON, OH — Several Solon sports teams had successful weekends, booking their trip to district and state playoffs. From boys cross country and soccer to a girls doubles tennis team, there's a lot to celebrate this week.

“This has been a very exciting week for Solon athletics. From a first-ever GCC conference title for our boys soccer team and a GCC crown for the boys cross country team to a state tournament bid for girls tennis in doubles. We are proud of the accomplishments of our student athletes as we move into post season competition," Solon Schools spokesperson Tamara Strom in an email to Patch.

The cross country team won the Greater Cleveland Conference outright over the weekend, at a contest in Strongsville. The squad will be moving on to district competition, but not before some team members rack up the awards. Logan Esper, Nathan Close, Sam Young and Aden Pickus all earned All-Conference honors.

The girls doubles tennis team of Maggie Yang and Alexis Ratner took third in their playoff bracket to punch their ticket to state competition. The state meet will be held in Cincinnati this week, the district said in a post on social media. In the photo with Yang and Ratner is their coach Fredrik Nyborg.

On October 13, the Solon Boys soccer team defeated Westlake by a score of 2-1 and were then named co-champions of the Greater Cleveland Conference. The boys will start district playoff play on October 20, when they play the winner of the Twinsburg and Kent Roosevelt game. The Comets will be ranked 3rd in the district tournament.
