WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Anthony Gonzalez blasted the newly installed Biden administration for pushing the U.S. back into the Paris Climate Accord.

“The Paris Climate Accord is a poorly negotiated international treaty that places an unfair burden on American households and businesses while doing next to nothing about the largest polluter in the world — China,” Gonzalez said in a statement.

After his inauguration on Wednesday, Biden signed an executive order reversing former President Donald Trump's decision to leave the Climate Accord. Gonzalez said Biden should have gone through Congress before re-joining the agreement.

Gonzalez, whose district includes Strongsville and Rocky River, said the Climate Accord is an unfair burden on Americans and Congress should have been consulted on rejoining the international pact.

“In other words, the accord will raise energy costs on all Americans and make us weaker against our foremost international competitor. If the Biden Administration wishes to re-enter the treaty, they should follow the constitutional process that is spelled out for all treaties and submit the deal to the Senate for advice and consent," Gonzalez said.

The U.S. represents about 15 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to a report from the Union of Concerned Scientists. That makes the U.S. the second largest individual contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

Gonzalez garnered national attention earlier this month when was one of 10 Republicans in the House who voted to impeach Trump.
