Strongsville Announces Furloughs Of City Workers

STRONGSVILLE, OH — As the new coronavirus pandemic continues to constrict revenue for governments and companies, the city of Strongsville has decided to place all municipal employees on a 32-hour work week starting June 1. This represents a one-day-a-week furlough and a 20-percent pay reduction, the city said in a statement.

The new schedule will not pertain to police, firefighters and dispatchers. Those three operations will maintain their current schedules, the city said. However, the new hours will affect the mayor, department heads, service department works and building inspectors.

Service Department employees will be scheduled in such a way that allows workers to respond to potential emergencies.

Due to the shift in hours, the Strongsville Municipal Offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Thursday and will be closed on Fridays. The Mayor's Court will also be closed on Fridays.

"The furloughs will stay in effect until at least Sept. 1, when the city’s finances will be evaluated and a decision made about returning to normal hours. We apologize for any inconvenience," the city said in a statement.

Strongsville's finance director did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment. This story will be updated with his comments.
