First, NEVER walk outside with a solicitor to check out an alleged problem with your roof, a tree or other issue. Sometimes, an accomplice is hiding nearby, and slips into your house while you're distracted, stealing whatever he can grab.

Second, make sure you're dealing with a reputable contractor. Check to see if he is displaying a current solicitor's permit issued by the Strongsville Police Department. If he's not, close the door and report the person to police at (440) 238-7373.

Next, check references -- make sure the company is in good standing with the Better Business Bureau and is registered with the Strongsville Building Department. You can call (440) 580-3105 to check.

Also, don't give money up front to an unknown contractor who promises to return to do the job -- no matter how friendly and honest he seems.
