Strongsville Politician Passes Bill Combating Deepfakes

STRONGSVILLE, OH — Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, from Strongsville, helped pass a bill combating "deepfakes," or digitally manipulated media. The legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday with unanimous support.

“Recent technological advances have reshaped the world we live in, but with that come new threats to our national security that must be addressed,” said Gonzalez. “It is critical that we learn to identify and combat deepfake technology now to stop scammers and foreign entities who would seek to do harm to the American public.”

Gonzalez's bill supports research into technology that identifies deepfakes.

Deepfake technology can be used to make it look like a person did or said something, on video, that they never did. Several politicians have called the technology a national security threat. Gonzalez's bill would provide funding support for research into ferreting out deepfake video, photographs and audio.

With the passage of this legislation, Gonzalez has now passed more bills through the House than any other freshman Republican in Congress.
