Toledo Election Winners: Mayor, City Council

Lucas County Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz earned an upset victory over his opponent, Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson.

TOLEDO, OH — Lucas County Treasurer Wade Kapszukiewicz earned an upset victory over his opponent, Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson.

"Tonight, Toledoans voted for a new direction," he said in a Toledo Blade report. "Tonight Toledoans voted for a new future, a new future for themselves and their children."

Hicks-Hudson, 66, was the city's first African-American mayor. As city council president, she became mayor after Mayor D. Michael Collins died following cardiac arrest in Feb. 2015.

Voters chose incumbents for four of six open city council seats Tuesday night. Sandy Spang, Rob Ludeman, Cecelia Adams, and Larry Sykes earned re-election. Newcomers Nick Komives and Gary Johnson also earned seats Tuesday night. The Toledo City Council is a 12-member council that includes six at-large seats and six by-district seats.
