Dutch Bros Donates More Than $1M To MDA

The 12th annual Drink One for Dane fundraiser to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association broke the company's previous donation record.

GRANTS PASS, OR — Dutch Bros Coffee on Thursday announced it had exceeded its fundraising goal for the 12th annual Drink One for Dane event benefitting the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Aiming for $1 million, Dutch Bros officials said the one-day fundraiser actually pulled in $1,351,780.

Taking all the proceeds from sales made at more than 300 Dutch Bros locations in seven states on May 11, Dutch Bros increased the total amount it has donated to MDA since 2007 to $4.8 million.

“We are truly grateful for the ongoing commitment Dutch Bros has demonstrated in helping MDA with its mission to find a cure for ALS," said MDA president and CEO Lynn O'Connor Vos. “With Travis’ leadership and dedication, the enthusiasm of the employees at over 300 Dutch Bros locations and the many thousands of customers that ‘drank one for Dane,’ MDA continues to be the leader in funding research to find treatments and cures to give everyone diagnosed with ALS a fighting chance."

Travis' brother Dane was diagnosed with ALS in 2005, roughly 13 years after the pair founded Dutch Bros Coffee together in Grants Pass. Two years later, in 2007, 100 Dutch Bros locations contributed to the first Drink One for Dane fundraiser.

“It’s hard to believe that all this time has passed, and here we are on the biggest fundraising day in Dutch Bros history," Dutch Bros co-founder Travis Boersma said. "Today is an opportunity not only to raise funds, but to give gratitude and respect to all the people who have suffered at the hands of this disease."

Dane passed away from his incurable disease in 2009, but his family has carried on the fight to help others afflicted with muscular diseases to honor Dane's life and his contributions to the world.

“To so many people he was a selfless leader and a symbol for all that we do, every good cause we rally around,” said Brant Boersma, Dane's son. “To me, I was just lucky enough to call him dad. I know he'd be proud of everything his family, company and community have accomplished."
