Wildfire Destroys 72 Structures Along California-Oregon Border

The Klamathon Fire has burned 35,000 acres along the California and Oregon border.

SISKIYOU COUNTY, CA -- A massive wildfire along the California and Oregon border destroyed 72 structures as of Sunday morning. Officials said the Klamathon Fire was 35,000 acres and 25 percent contained in its latest update.

The blaze, which killed one person, erupted Friday afternoon off of Klamathon Road and Copco Road, just south of Hornbrook. It was one of several wildfires to erupt in recent days in California, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate.

The following areas were under mandatory evacuations:

  • The communities of Hornbrook, Hilt, Colestin and Irongate Reservoir
  • Klamath River Community Estates – east of Black Mountain to Desavado Road, south of Copco Road to Ager Beswick Road
  • East Irongate Estates: Areas south of Irongate Reservoir/Copco Road, north of Ager/Beswick Road, west of Desavado Road and east of Snackenbury Creek
  • Copco Lake Area: Areas east of Jenny/Fall Creek, south of the Oregon State Line, north of Copco Road and west of Topsey Grade:

The following areas received evacuation warnings:

  • East of the Yreka Western Railroad to Iron Gate Reservoir and South to Copco/Ager and North to the CA/OR State line
  • Pheasant Valley area, east of Interstate 5, South of the Summit of Black Mountain, west of Ager and north of Yreka Ager Road
  • Airport Road area, southwest of York Road, west of Airport Road north of Shelly Road and east of Ager Road Bogus Creek area, south of Ager Beswick Road, east of York Road and west of Bogus Creek

An evacuation center was created at Jackson Street School at 405 Jackson St.
