Gresham Bakers That Refused to Bake for Lesbians Post They are Closed

Sweet Cakes by Melissa had closed their store. Now they appear to have closed their business.

The bakers at the heart of a battle that pit so-called religious freedom against civil rights when they refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple appear to have folded up shop in Oregon once and for all.

Melissa and Aaron Klein - owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa - received national attention in 2013 for their decision - had already closed their physical store that year. They had been selling online.

A Facebook post - first reported by the Oregonian - indicates that may have changed.

"We have closed Sweet Cakes," they posted. "We appreciate everyone's continued prayer and support."

A message for the Kleins asking for more details about their decision to close and what they plan next has not yet been returned.

Last year, state labor commissioner Brad Avakian ordered the couple to pay $135,000 in damages to the couple who have appealed the decision.

The Kleins received more than $500,000 in donations after their story became public. They have not yet paid the couple - the money will remain in escrow until after appeals are decided.

Arguments are expected later this year.
