Gresham Boeing Factory Will Start Doing Work That Had Been Done Overseas

Company says that it will reduce cost and support manufacturing in the United States.

It's a reverse on the recent trend of manufacturing work being shipped from the United States overseas. Boeing announced Thursday it was taking work that had been done overseas and moving to its facility in Gresham.

The factory will manufacture and assemble parts for some of the company's most well-known planes: the Next Generation 737, 737 MAX, and 777. Boeing says this expands the work done on commercial planes by the Portland facility.

The parts that will be made - flap actuation systems - had been made and assembled by suppliers outside the country. The systems are responsible for extending and retracting the wing's flaps during different phases of flight, according to the company.

Company officials say that while it doesn't add new jobs to the plant, it does stabilize the facility's economic situation.

Boeing Portland - as it's called despite being located in Gresham - employs 1,600 people on an 87-acre site.
