Survey Says Mt. Hood Snowpack 70 Percent of Normal

Warm weather in April might have been nice but it hasn't helped.

There may be a lot of snow on Mt. Hood but it's only 70 percent of normal and that could have an affect on wildfire season.

They measured about 7.5 feet of snow and about four inches of water.

"It's a lot but it's below normal," said Julie Koeberle of the U.S> Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Koeberle said that the mountain had been on track to be at normal levels but it turned warm on April 1 and that has hurt the snowpack.

"April was really warm and we initiated snowmelt when we usually at this site are accumulating snow," she said.
