While studded tires become legal on Thursday, ODOT says they cause a lot of damage and they have some other ideas for you.

GRESHAM, OR – It's that time of year. There's rain in the metro area, snow on the mountain, and people are getting ready to put studded tires on their vehicles.

The Oregon Department of Transportation says that as of Thursday, Nov. 1, they are once again legal in the state.

While they will be legal, ODOT would love you to consider other options.

They cause ruts in the road, rain falls in, freezes, and potholes are born.

Because of that, ODOT suggests considering using chains or other kinds of traction tires.

Another option, they say, is waiting until the weather is better.

Studded tire season runs through March 31.
