55,000 Pounds of Chicken Recalled Because of Contamination

Minnesota company says chicken "may be contaminated with extraneous materials."

GNP Company, a Minnesota firm, is recalling approximately 55,608 pounds of chicken that may be contained "with extraneous materials," according to the United State's Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The products were produced between June 6th and June 9th.

GNP says almost all of the products are sold in bulk to foodservice and institutional outlets.

The one retail item being recalled is Just BARE Whole Chicken (UPC 024105594057), sold in 4-pound poly-bags, with a use-by/freeze-by date stamp of 6/26/16. No other Just BARE whole chicken, tray pack or deli products are affected. The product bears code P-322 inside the USDA mark of inspection. Consumers who have purchased this item are urged not to use or consume it. These products should be disposed of or returned to the store where purchased for a refund.

  • 40-lb. cases containing “Gold’n Plump Chicken Tenders 34400” with a use-by date of 6/16/2016, 6/18/2016, and 6/19/2016
  • 40-lb. cases containing “Gold’n Plump BONELESS SKINLESS CHICKEN BREAST PORTIONS 24700” with a use-by date of 6/29/2016.
  • 40-lb. cases containing “Gold’n Plump CHICKEN LEG QUARTERS 20500” with a use-by date of 6/20/2016, 6/21/2016,and 6/22/2016.
  • 40-lb. cases containing “Gold’n Plump CHICKEN DRUMSTICKS 30800” with a use-by date of 6/20/2016.
  • 40-lb. cases containing “Gold’n Plump BONELESS SKINLESS CHICKEN BREAST PIECES 36400” with a use-by date of 6/22/16.
  • 40-lb. cases containing “Gold’n Plump CHICKEN THIGHS WITHOUT BACKS 37800” with a use-by date of 6/20/2016, 6/24/2016, and 6/26/2016.
  • 40-lb. cases containing “Gold’n Plump CHICKEN DRUMSTICKS 20800” with a use-by date of 6/18/2016 and 6/23/2016.
  • 40-lb. cases containing “Gold’n Plump UNDER GRADE CHICKEN WING SEGMENTS 22900” with a use-by date of 6/17/2016, 6/19/2016, 6/20/2016, and 6/21/2016.

The Department of Agriculture says that there have been no instances of people getting sick.

The problem was discovered by the company, which noticed sand and black soil in some of the packages.

GNP and law enforcement are both investigating.
