Newberg Recruits Lake Oswego Asst Superintendent For Top Job

Joe Morelock, currently Lake Oswego's Assistant Superintendent for Academics and Student Programs, was named interim superintendent May 10.

From Lake Oswego School District: The Newberg School Board named Dr. Joe Morelock Interim Superintendent for the 2018-19 school year. He replaces outgoing Superintendent Kym LeBlanc-Esparza on July 1.

Morelock was the unanimous choice of the six-member board following multiple candidate interviews during a thorough search process.

“Newberg has always been known for its incredibly supportive community and the quality of its schools,” said Morelock. “I am honored to serve the Newberg Public Schools as Interim Superintendent, and look forward to meeting the staff and community to work together on building a bright future for our students.”

Morelock currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent for Academics and Student Programs at the Lake Oswego School District, a position he has held for four years.

Previously Morelock served as Director of Technology the Canby School District.

“We are losing a champion for children,” said LOSD’s soon to be Interim Superintendent Michael Musick. “I’ve had the great pleasure of working with Joe to build a stronger, more dynamic district for all students. Joe’s leadership and efforts to improve student achievement for all will be his lasting legacy. I, along with his many colleagues, will miss him greatly. My goal will be to have our two new assistant superintendents carry on his initiatives.”

Frank Lauzich, Executive Director of Elementary Programs and Lou Bailey, Executive Director of Secondary Programs will both join LOSD on July 1.

During his 25-years in public education, Morelock’s experiences range from teacher and coach to leadership and technology management. The tri-lingual speaker is familiar with working with culturally, academically and economically diverse students and families.

Morelock earned his Doctorate in Education from Portland State University and a Masters of Arts in Teaching at Pacific University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in World Languages from Lewis and Clark College.

Lake Oswego School District is home to 7,000 students and 700 staff members.

The district is rated as one of Niche 2018 Best School Districts in the country.
