Guide Dog Struck By Hit And Run Driver Doing Well, In Foster Care

Sapphire, a guide dog for the blind, was struck by a hit and run driver. She is improving and has been moved to a foster care home.

OREGON CITY, OR – It's been almost two weeks since Sapphire, a guide dog for the blind, was helping her person across the street when a hit and run driver missed the person and struck her. Despite the short time, Sapphire is improving and has been moved to a foster care home.

"Although it may be several months before Guide Dogs for the Blind veterinarians will know how complete Sapphire's recovery will be, they are pleased with her progress given the level of injuries she sustained," a spokesman for Guide Dogs for the Blind, who trained her, said on Friday.

Sapphire, a 4-year-old Golden Retriever/Labrador mix, suffered serious trauma to her head and one of her legs.

Sapphire was helping her person, Tiffany Taylor, cross Southeast Monterey Avenue when a car sped toward them, hitting her but sparing Taylor.

While she is recovering, officials say that she won't be able to return to her job helping Taylor.

The driver who struck her is still on the run.
